Pakistan AIDS Prevention Society (PAPS) is a non-governmental , non-profit making AIDS service organization which was established in the year 1990, when a group of dedicated community workers and some researchers on HIV/AIDS decided to join hands and address the HIV/AIDS issues in the country. The society has a 24-member board representing the different sectors of the community including one person living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Mr. Shouket Ali, the Secretary General , heads the executive committee and with the help of a management team carries out the day to day work of the society.
PHILOSOPHY
Pakistan AIDS Prevention Society is committed to the protection of fundamental human rights and respect for individual dignity. It recognizes that there are diverse social and cultural perspectives on HIV/AIDS but these should not override other consideration such as protection against political , social and religious intolerance, and public health strategies needed to combat the epidemic .
PAPS advocates non discrimination in all areas of human endeavor regardless of HIV status , gender, religious, ethnicity, sexual orientation , political ideology , involvement in sex work, drug use , and cultural or social status .
PAPS encourages maximum participation of women and men with HIV and others affected by the epidemic , in all policies, plans, programs related to prevention , care and support , treatment and research . PAPS also recognizes the need for coordinated programs to combat HIV/AIDS.
